AS and A Levels

The AICE Diploma

To achieve the Cambridge AICE Diploma, learners must achieve a minimum of seven credits (including Cambridge International AS Level Global Perspectives & Research) from subject groups 1, 2, and 3 (and optionally Group 4) to be awarded the Diploma. Learners must achieve at least one credit from each of Groups 1, 2 and 3. The remaining credits can come from any of the groups. A maximum of two credits can count from Group 4. A Cambridge International ASLevel is awarded one credit, and a Cambridge International A Level isawarded two credits.

The curriculum areas

Students may freely choose which Engees-courses they wish to study. They don’t necessarily have to aim for taking an examination. However, those aiming for the AICE Diploma have to distribute their credits to contain at least one subject from each group.

Group 1: Mathematics and Sciences
Group 2: Languages
Group 3: Arts and Humanities
Group 4: Interdisciplinary and skills-based subjects (optional)

The recognition of A/AS levels

The (Advanced Level) or A Level has exactly the same value in admitting students to all universities as its UK equivalent. It is also accepted as an entry qualification by universities of the European Union, on a par with the Finnish Matriculation Examination, the French Baccalaureat, the German Abitur etc. The (Advanced Subsidiary Level), or AS Level, represents the first half of an A Level course but may also be taken as a free-standing qualification. AS Levels are widely accepted in all UK universities and carry half the weighting of an A Level. Institutions outside the UK can be expected to offer half that amount of credit for AS Levels.

Examinations and results

The examinations are administered in May/June and November/December testing sessions each year. A candidate working towards the AICE Diploma may use up to three testing sessions to take the equivalent of six full credit examinations as long as they are taken within a 13-month period. The examination papers are prepared by the UCLES. For both AS and A Level examinations, candidates are graded on an alphabetical scale, A to E, with grade A indicating a top level of performance and grade E indicating a minimum passing grade. The results for examinations are sent to schools, in the form of a Statement of Results, in the middle of August for candidates who have taken the examinations in June. The results for the November examinations are sent to schools in late January. Certificates for successful candidates are normally sent to schools about six weeks after the issue of results.
